Episode Overview

In his journey across the American West, a spirited Quebec trapper crosses paths with Arapaho Chief Lame Beaver, sparking a chain of relationships that spans from the late 1700s to the 20th century. While visiting St. Louis to sell his furs, he meets the affluent silversmith Herman Bockweiss (Raymond Burr) and forms a partnership to supply guns and silver to the Native Americans. He agrees to marry Bockweiss's daughter, Lise (Sally Kellerman), but soon returns to his trapping lifestyle. During this time, he rescues his future ally, Alexander McKeag (Richard Chamberlain), a Scotsman fleeing his past. As they journey to an Arapaho camp, McKeag is cared for by Chief Lame Beaver's daughter, Clay Basket (Barbara Carrera), with whom he falls in love.
